The Last Maharajas

Costumes

From the Great Durbar to Independence

1911-1947

In collaboration with the Hutheesing Heritage Foundation, the Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent Foundation is devoting its 12th exhibition  to the costumes of the courts of princely India in the final days of the  Raj. Deprived of their powerbase by the British crown, these last Maharajas  cultivated their splendour and sought to outdo each other in terms of grandeur.  Some sixty models and accessories illustrate a period in which pomp became  the official court language: gold, silver, silk, brocade,  embroideries, a profusion of colours and precious materials all testify to  the unbridled magnificence of the costumes of the era.

Curators : Jérôme Neutres and Umang Hutheesing

Scenographer : Christophe Martin
